Nungarin is a small town located in the wheatbelt region of Western Australia. The area was first settled by European farmers in the 1860s when they began to explore the interior of Western Australia and establish farms. However, before the arrival of Europeans, the land was home to the York, Balardong and Ngatjumay Aboriginal groups.

The name Nungarin is derived from the Aboriginal word 'noongarin', meaning 'plenty of big mushrooms'. It is believed that the area was rich in mushrooms due to the fertile soil and rainfall.

In the early 1900s, the town began to grow with the construction of a railway line, connecting Nungarin to other wheat belt towns. This facilitated the movement of goods and people, enabling the town to flourish. The railway line was also used to transport soldiers during World War II, as Nungarin was the site of an army training camp.

During the 1950s, the town's population grew due to the expansion of farming activities and the introduction of new technologies, such as tractors. This led to the establishment of new businesses, including a general store and a hotel called the 'Railway Hotel'.

Today, Nungarin is home to approximately 420 people and is a popular tourist destination. Visitors can learn about the town's history by visiting the Nungarin Heritage Machinery and Army Museum. This museum showcases a collection of old farming machinery, as well as military vehicles used during World War II.

The town also hosts the Nungarin Wheatbelt Markets, which occurs on the second Sunday of every month. Here, visitors can purchase a range of locally produced goods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, honey, and handmade crafts.

In addition to its farming and business activities, Nungarin is known for its beautiful landscapes, including wildflowers, rolling hills, and nature reserves. The town's proximity to the town of Merredin allows visitors the opportunity to explore other attractions, such as the Merredin Military Museum and the excellent public swimming pool and leisure centre.

In conclusion, the history of Nungarin is a tale of hardworking farmers and the development of a small rural town from humble beginnings. Its survival is a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of Western Australians as they continue to thrive in the harsh outback conditions .
